Marvin J. Mattson

MISERY BAY – Marvin J. W. Mattson, 85, of Misery Bay, died on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at his home following a brief battle with cancer.

He was born on August 17, 1928, in Painesdale, a son of the late John H. and Elizabeth S. (Routinen) Mattson. He attended the South Range and Painesdale schools, later receiving his G.E.D.

Marvin entered into the U.S. Army Air Corps. in 1945, and later served in the Army Reserves until 1953.

On November 5, 1959, he married Aili Kemppainen. She preceded him in death on February 27, 2010.

Marvin was employed for 25 years at the White Pine Copper Company.

He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Mass City VFW Post 4167, Alfred Erickson Post 186 American Legion of Hancock, the Dr. Percy H. Wilson Chapter 115 DAV of Chassell and the Aircrafts Owners and Pilots Association.

Surviving are a brother, George Mattson of Houghton; a sister, Genevieve Molnar of West Point, Georgia; step-children, Florence (Lawrence) Kangas of Cheboygan, Michigan, Helen (the late Donald) Johnson of Greenland; Roy (Veronica) Kemppainen of Republic; numerous step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; four nieces; one nephew and several cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Marvin was also preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Mattson; a niece, Gail Molnar; and a step-son, Benhart Kemppainen.

As requested cremation has taken place.

Graveside services will be held in the Toivola Cemetery in August with the date and time to be announced later.

Arrangements are being handled by the Mountain View Mortuary of South Range, Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
