PLLL Minor finals set
HOUGHTON – Brent Heinonen’s triple set off a walk-off RBI for Kade Farrell as South Range VFW advanced to tonight’s Portage Lake Little League Minor (age 9-10) division championship with an 8-7 seven-inning win over Auto Pro Glass and Tire in the semifinals Saturday.
Farrell’s walk-off capped a 2-for-3 day. Andrew Kinnunen was 3-for-4 at the plate and pitched 4 2/3 innings for the winners.
VFW overcame a 6-3 hole after four innings with a four-run fifth before Brad Johnson’s two-out single in the bottom of the sixth sent the game to extra innings. Austin Miller and Chad Nordstrom both hit three-run inside-the-park homers for Auto Pro and Johnson struck out nine in four innings on the mound.
A four-run fourth and strong pitching from Nolan Sturos catapulted Tervo Agency into the Minor division championship game Saturday with a 5-3 defeat of the Portage Health Green Sox.
Sturos allowed one hit in five shutout innings of relief, striking out nine. In addition, he went 3-for-3 at the plate and homered.
After Sturos’ round trip in the top of the first, Portage Health scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning with Jonah Horning doubling.
It stayed 3-1 Portage until the top of the fourth, when Tervo took the lead. Dylan Primeau’s triple was the biggest blow of the frame.
