State tourney bid begins with win for Portage Lake

BOYNE CITY – Portage Lake started its Little League Major (age 11-12) softball state tournament run with a victory by the closest of margins Thursday.

Rochester Hills scored two runs on three hits in the sixth inning, but Portage Lake stranded the tying run on third base and won 5-4.

After falling behind 2-0 early, PL got its first run of the tournament after Cassidy Becia singled and scored on an error.

They took the lead in the fifth after both Ally Ronis and Abby Brooks scored on a walk and a Rochester Hills error and extended it with two more runs in the sixth from D’Andra Kero and Josie Connors.

Rochester Hills came close to tying it up, but pitcher Delaney Heinonen induced a game-ending grounder to first.

Heinonen pitched a complete-game five-hitter with 12 strikeouts and four walks.

Portage Lake continues in its four-team pool with a game against Gladstone at 4 p.m. today.
