Over 50: South Range builds on league lead
TAPIOLA – South Range continued its firm hold on first place in the Over 50 Softball League with a hard-fought decision over Houghton Thursday night.
The 8-4 victory upped the Range record to 6-1 on the year, while Houghton slipped to 4-3.
Winning pitcher Dave Kaiponen doubled and tripled among his three hits and Joe Rossi also counted a trio of safeties. Brien Ricci and Dick Franti each had two hits.
Houghton’s offense was paced by two hits each from Brian Turner, Dave Usitalo, Jed Pollard and Dave Hoffman. Steve Dunstan was the losing pitcher.
Chassell broke into the winning column by scoring 8 runs in the fourth inning and adding seven more in the fifth en route to an 18-4 win over Tapiola.
Kevin Tormala and Daryl Putala laced four hits each for the 1-6 winners, while Steve Giddings and Tino Kitalong added three apiece. Gordy Koski and winning hurler Mitch Lake had two raps.
Tapiola, 3-4, was paced by Pete Oikarinen with three safeties and Den Salbashian and Jim Oikarainen with two each.
