Making sound choices

HOUGHTON – On an unseasonably cool day, people walking down Shelden Avenue got to combat the low temperatures with a hearty soup as part of Houghton’s Healthy Eating Initiative.

The city partnered with Roy’s Pasties and Bakery for a booth, which included servings of butternut squash soup, a piece of almond Danish and bread from locally grown wheat.

“It’s a soup we offer at the bakery on a regular basis, so we thought it would be a perfect fit,” said Roy’s co-owner Trisia Narhi.

This is the fourth time for the Healthy Eating Initiative, which is held seasonally.

“We’re just doing it to help people think a little more about their health, and fight the fight against fat, and let them see other choices that are healthy and taste just as good,” said Police Lt. Nick Roberts.

The food drew rave reviews from passersby, even vegetable haters.

“I don’t eat vegetables, but it’s very good,” said George Newman of Calumet. “Don’t tell anyone I ate it, because it’ll ruin my reputation.”

Ethan Bell, from Fruitport, Michigan, also liked the soup, as well as the concept behind it.

“I’ve been vegetarian for three years now, and a lot of the reason was for healthy eating,” he said. “I think this kind of stuff is really awesome, especially getting younger kids involved.”
