HOUGHTON – Children are fascinated by large vehicles, and because of that fact, Dial Help conducts its annual Big Truck Day as a fundraising event.

Rebecca Crane, Dial Help executive director, said Big Truck Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Copper Country Mall parking lot.

There is a fee to get into the event, Crane said.

“We’re just asking families to pay $5 per child,” she said. “Infants are free.”

There is no charge for adults, Crane said.

The event will include large delivery trucks, firefighting vehicles, a bucket truck, police vehicles and an ambulance, among others, Crane said.

Besides the vehicles, Crane said the event will include refreshments, a bake sale, children’s games with prizes, a coloring contest, which will provide toy trucks to two winners, face painting and a cake walk. There will also be music and an appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog.

Crane said Dial Help provides a 24-hour crisis line, suicide intervention, services for all crime victims, substance abuse and crime prevention programs for local schools, counseling and community education programs.

Dial Help recently lost more than $45,000 in funding, Crane said, so the Big Truck Day is an important fundraiser.

“All of the proceeds go to support our programs and services,” she said.

Crane said anyone who has a vehicle which would fit in with Big Truck Day may be included if they call no later than 5 p.m. today.

“We still have plenty of room for them,” she said.
