Maawanji’iding is a celebration not to be missed
The pageantry, majesty and heritage of the Ojibwa people will once again take center stage this weekend as the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community presents their annual Maawanji’iding, or Pow Wow.
The event will take place Friday through Sunday at the Ojibwa Campground. This year’s theme is “Honoring the Drum.”
For those visiting the area or for residents who have not been, the Maawanji’iding is certainly something to be experienced. While enjoying the amazing food and the wide variety of crafts and other items for sale in the dozens of vendor booths, plan your visit around one of several Grand Entries. The drums, singing and regalia remind you the weekend is indeed sacred and spiritual.
With the many activities on hand it is difficult to lose sight of the fact, the Pow Wow is first and foremost a celebration of a proud history, culture and way of life. And it is not to be missed.
