Tech picked to finish second in GLIAC women’s soccer

HOUGHTON – Michigan Tech was a strong second in coach’s balloting for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason women’s soccer poll.

The Huskies received three of 13 first-place votes and finished behind only defending national champion and national preseason No. 1 Grand Valley State. The Lakers, who won their third national title in the last five years in 2013, had 141 poll points.

Tech was second with 123, followed by Ohio Dominican, Ferris State, Ashland, Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley.

The bottom half of the league included Northwood, Findlay, Walsh, Tiffin, Lake Erie and Malone.

The Huskies enter the fifth season in program history coming off a 14-6-1 record in 2013 and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. Ten players graduated from the first four-year class, but leading scorer Lexi Herrewig (eight goals, four assists) returns for her junior season, as do key defenders Mackenzie Jordon and Emily Morin.

The Huskies’ first home game of 2014 is Sept. 5 vs. Winona (Minn.) State, the first of four in a row at Sherman Field to begin the season. The fourth of those, Sept. 21 vs. Northern Michigan, is also the conference opener.
